Questions from the March Philosophy cafe included:
ReplyDeleteIs morality merely a matter of opinion or are there universal moral principals?
What advantages / disadvantages derive from being good?
Does the goodness or badness of a person's actions affect their value as a human being and their entitlements in life?
Is evil a consequence of our weakness of will or the devil within us?
Recently, I visited Cuba. It was an eye opener and my conclusions in relation to our last debate were that the simpler our lives, the less material possessions we have, the harder we have to work for our basic needs; we are much better people. Also we are much happier when we have very little and morality is a natural part of our lives. I feel in Western (richer) countries, where material wealth means so much, morality can easily be lost.
